It is weeks since the outbreak of a maddening virus has devastated the country. People try to survive as they once did, trying to stave off infection and continue with some semblance of normal life. The origins of the “disease” are unknown, and with no reliable communication or functioning government, the only certainties are that the epidemic continues to spread and that no one is safe.
CHILD IN THE DARK takes place on the night a typical suburban neighborhood loses its grip on this havoc-wreaking plague. When a father comes home violently infected with a feverish hunger for violence, his wife is forced to kill him, only to contract the virus herself during the attack. Knowing that it won’t be long until she is overcome by the madness next, she instructs her ten-year-old daughter, Amanda, to lock her in the basement and to not let her out no matter what. Amanda is blind – and now all alone.
From this powerful opening to a nerve-shattering conclusion, CHILD IN THE DARK does not let up as our blind heroine must survive several attacks throughout the night from a number of the infected who have lost their minds to the disease and are filled with bloodlust. With every attack comes the possibility that Amanda will either contract the virus or be killed. Even those who are not infected prove untrustworthy, as chaos, fear and confusion have gripped the population and pushed people to paranoid extremes. Amanda’s only guide through this night of horror is a man on a CB radio leading a transport to safety. He will be there at sunrise to pick her up. She must do only one thing until then: Survive.
